Hey listeners! It's Young & Not So Stupid with another journal club episode. This time, on a topic Frances was really excited to discuss: GMOs!

GMOs often get a bad rap in society and the media. But we are here to put some of those myths/fears to rest. GMOs are organisms where their DNA is changed outside of natural methods, like genetic editing or mutagenesis. GMOs have been developed in many areas, such as agriculture, livestock, and even medicine!

Frances started the discussion with a paper on genetic editing of rice using CRISPR/Cas9. That paper showed successful genetic editing of rice cultivars to make them higher yielding, outpacing even naturally occurring mutations!

Virginia broke down a systematic review on the effects of GMOs on animals. These authors complied 36 different studies, trying to see if there was convincing evidence of harm in long term or multi-generational studies. They did not find convincing evidence of harm, but were advocating for more and better designed studies moving forward.

We hope you enjoyed.
