Hi friends, it's your Young & Not So Stupid podcast hosts, Virginia and Frances. We are here with another journal club episode, all about virtual reality (VR) in medicine and STEM! While VR was developed by in the gaming field, it is quickly being repurposed for educational use as well.
Virginia discussed Ekstrand et al. 2018, a paper showing how VR could help first and second year medical students with a daunting task- learning the complex structures of the brain and how they relate. While VR did not help boost the students test scores compared to traditional book studying, it did reduce student's perceived neurophobia. Students felt better prepared to learn neurology.
Frances covered Bennett and Saunders 2019, a manuscript showing how a fun cell biology game, 'Journey to Inside a Cell' (http://thebodyvr.com/journey-inside-a-cell/) got students more engaged in the material and had a positive impact on their learning. The components of the cell are complicated and microscopic, and VR could be a way to break down challenging material in a fun, interactive way!
