Hi YANSS friends. We were so excited to wrap up our diversity in STEM and medicine episodes with a very important part 2: what can our fields do to increase and promote diversity?

Virginia started with the medical field, highlighting the social campaign #ilooklikeasurgeon which broke down barriers for surgeons who do not fit the 'stereotypical' surgeon mold. She also discussed healthy people 2020, which can provide resources for providers about being more culturally competent.

Frances broke down what academic institutions can do to increase diversity, and what you can do yourself everyday! She discussed how institutions need to focus on recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce. For individuals, you can do many things to promote diversity; such as testing your implicit biases (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/), joining a committee, and starting a conversation about diversity with your peers and leadership.

Hope you enjoyed the episode!
