Hey everyone, it's the YANSS pod. We are here today to bring you a very exciting episode, centered on diversity in STEM and medicine. We had so much information in this episode, we decided to split it into two parts.

For this first episode, we discuss what diversity is (a property of a group, not a person), what are some common types of diversity (i.e. race, gender, ability, national origin, politic views, seniority), and why it is important to have diversity workplaces (we are better when we are more diverse).

Virginia tackles some common issues of diversity in medicine. She found that there are less Black men in medicine now then there were in 1970, indicating there needs to be change in medicine. She walks us through how starting from the beginning of the medicine pipeline (the application), medicine can do better for upholding diversity. Frances relays some important issues of diversity in academia, starting with how faculty are still more likely to be white and male. She discusses some challenges in academia maintaining non-diverse work spaces, including barriers to entry, implicit bias, and academic culture.

Stay tuned in two weeks for part 2, where we discuss what we can do to change, and make STEM and medicine more diverse. But for now, here are the sources.
