Hey YANSS crew, Frances here. We decided to do something a little different for this week's episode and try out a new format, highlighting scientists you should know! Our first featured scientist is Dr. Marie M. Daly.

Dr. Daly grew up in Queens, NY. Her parents supported her scientific interests; her father briefly studied chemistry at Cornell, and her mother fostered her love for reading. Dr. Daly earned three degrees in Chemistry, working all the way to a PhD.

Dr. Daly unknowingly was the first female African American to earn a PhD in chemistry in the US. Dr. Daly's career included a wide breadth of research, studying digestive enzymes, cellular components, and links to heart disease. While she was teaching and researching, she also was passionate about bringing students of color to higher education.

Her life is an inspiration to anyone who has faced barriers to higher education.

We hope you enjoyed the episode!
